Now you have to start training your bird.  Whenever you see your bird shifting his weight or squatting (which are usually signals he is getting ready to relive himself), you will give him a verbal command.  It is very important that you identify the specific behavior your bird exhibits when he needs to go to the bathroom as it may be different for every bird.  You will need to consistently give the “go potty” command every time your bird begins to relieve themselves, so you need to have a large block of time devoted to training your bird.  The command you use is up to you, but usually something along the lines of “go potty” works well.  Also keep in mind that every bird has a different potty schedule.  Sometimes parrots can go to the bathroom every 20 minutes.

Once your bird makes the association between your command and his going to the bathroom, you can practice the command once he is out of the cage.  Play with your bird out of the cage and pay attention to when he exhibits his potty behavior.  When you see this behavior, put your bird back into his cage and give him your special command (“go potty”).  When your parrot goes to the bathroom in his cage, praise him and reward him with his favorite treat.  Repeat this process many times in a row, to really get your bird to understand his new trick.  Once your bird has consistently relieved himself in his cage instead of on you, you will have officially trained your parrot!

As with nutrition labels on human foods, dog food nutrition labels will list the ingredients from heaviest to lightest.  If your dog food has meat products in it, it is likely that either meat or water will be the first ingredient.  Meat is made up of water, so water usually becomes a “heavily weighted” ingredient in your dog’s food when meat is present.

Do you ever notice that your dog’s food says it contains “byproducts”?  This does not have a definitive meaning, as it could be a bad thing or a good thing.  For example, liver is considered a “byproduct,” but it actually contains very healthy nutrients for your dog. However, “byproducts” can sometimes mean that your dog food contains unhealthy meat byproducts like udders, intestines, brains, even blood!  If your dog food contains byproducts, try to find out which byproducts the food contains.

Keep in mind that the FDA would not approve dog food that could potentially harm your dog.  If your dog food is labeled “complete and balanced,” this means that it is safe for your dog because it contains a healthy balance of nutrients.  You should not trust a label that says the food is made of “human-grade ingredients.”  Nor if it says “made in a USDA inspected facility.”  Neither of these two labels are approved by the FDA, and do not prove that the food is healthy for the dog.

I pay a lot of attention to the food labels of my dog’s food.  One dog food brand that I found that I really like is Earthborn Holistic.  For my adult dog, I feed him the Earthborn Adult Vantage Dog Food, pictured above.  It has a large amount of meat proteins like chicken meal and whitefish meal.  It also has high levels of calcium and phosphorous which help maintain strong teeth and bones.  It also contains healthy grains that aid in digestion, like oatmeal and brown rice.  Also, it is infused with Omega 3′s and 6′s, and we all know how healthy these fatty acids are!  My dog absolutely loves the taste of Earthborn Adult Vantage Dog Food, and yours will too!

If you have a dog that weighs less than 20 pounds, Earthborn Holistic has a formula of dog food specifically for small dogs:  Earthborn Small Breed.   It contains the same beneficial ingredients as the Earthborn Adult Vanage Dog Food, but is made to provide the special nutrients little dogs need to live a long life!

Grass: If you have a grass backyard, one of the best methods for picking up your dog’s mess is to use a classic pooper scooper.  Allens Super Poop Scooper for Grass, pictured to the right, is one of my top choices.  One reason I like it is because you do not have to bend over to pick up the poop.  All you need to do is use one hand to to squeeze the comfort grip handle, and the jagged-edge claws will clamp over your dog’s waste.  Allens Super Poop Scooper for Grass is made of durable plastic and will last you a long time!

Sandy: If your backyard is sandy (or even grassy), you can use the Four Paws Wire Rake Pooper Scooper, which has a rake that can easily scoop poop through sand.  The metal rake is easily cleaned with just a spray from the garden hose, and will not rust.  It is 28 inches high, so you will not have to hurt your back bending over to pick up poop!

Concrete: Allens Pooper Scooper for Hard Surfaces is great to use on hard surfaces like concrete, sidewalks, and patios.  It comes in three different sizes (14.5 inches, 24 inches, and 29 inches), so whether a tall or short person is doing the clean up at your house, you can get a pooper scooper that will be the perfect size!  It is made from clean black plastic, which means to rusting.  The scooper is 24 inches, and can handle large loads without bothering your back.

Snow: When it is snowy out, you will need a special pooper scooper.  The Easy Scoop Dog Pooper Scooper can easily lift waste through snow.  There is a basket behind the rake that can hold waste while you cover the entire backyard.

Do not forget that you need to properly dispose of the waste.  Either flush it down the toilet, or put it in a place where no family members or pets will be able to access the waste.

1) Litter Scoops:  Touching your pet’s waste with your hands can lead to disease or infection.  You definitely need a scoop to clean out your cat’s liter box!  Scoops come in a variety of prices.  Cheaper priced ones are generally made of cheap plastic material, and these will most likely not last you a long time.  It is better to purchase a more expensive and long-lasting scoop.  I would recommend the No Tear Litter Scoop, which is made of durable plastic  The No Tear Litter Scoop has a rubber edge that will not tear the litter box liners!  It also helps prevent the scoop from becoming warn down.

Even if you have a self-cleaning litter box, you probably still want to have a scoop!  In between the times the litter box self-cleans, it is nice to get rid of messes.

2) Liners:  Liners make cleaning up litter boxes so much easier!   The liners I use are heavy-duty Petmate Cat Pan Liners.  They come in three different sizes so you can find the one that fits your litter box perfectly!  The only time I would not recommend using a liner is if your cat likes to dig deep in their litter box.  Their claws will get caught on the liner, and trust me when I say your cat will not enjoy this!

3) Mats:  You should put a mat underneath your cat’s litter box, because it will prevent your cat from tracking litter materials throughout the house.  The Litter Round-Up Mat, shown above, is an extra large mat (47X32X45), which is also perfect for keeping the area around your cat’s litter box clean.  Think of mats like the rug that you have near your back door; you put it there so that people do not track in snow or dirt through your house.  Cat mats work just like these rugs because they wipe off your cat’s feet and keep the rest of your house clean!  You may have some items in your house that you can use as a litter box mat.  For example, an old rug or small piece of carpet would work just fine!

It is common for older dogs to have bone and joint abnormalities.  Many older dogs suffer from arthritis and hip dysplasia.  This makes it difficult for older dogs to be as active as they were when they were younger.  Fortunately, there are great nutritional supplements that can help your dog through old age.  The main ingredient in these supplements is glucosamine, which is shown to improve joint health.  It has even been shown to increase the healing process of skin wounds.

I originally heard about glucosamine supplements through my vet.  I have an 11-year-old terrier mix who suffers from arthritis.  I took my dog to the vet for his yearly check up, and I reported the unusual lethargy I was seeing in my dog.   My vet said that my dog was suffering from arthritis, as do many dogs of a similar age.  I hid the tablets in food, or snacks like peanut butter, and within two weeks, I could see an improvement in pet’s my mobility!  I noticed much more energy, and he did not seem to be in pain like he was before.

The brand I use is Excel Glucosamine with MSM, shown to the right.  This particular brand has HSM to improve joint flexibility.  It also has vitamin C for healthy collagen growth.  I would definitely recommend glucosamine tablets to other pet owners.  Be sure to talk to your vet about proper dosing amounts.
