  • Be extra careful when your dog or pet is near frozen water.
  • Groom your dog or pet regularly to keep him/her properly insulated.
  • Feed your dog extra calories if he is a working dog.
  • Towel or blow-dry a wet dog or pet.
  • Don’t leave your dog or pet alone in a car.
  • Antifreeze is poisonous to dogs or pets although they like the smell.
  • Chocolate and alcohol (abundant during winter holidays) should be kept away from pets.
  • Rock salt to melt ice may irritate dog or pets footpads. Either a pair of boots or Pet-safe salt should be used.
  • Provide plenty of fresh water for your dog or pet.
  • Be careful of fireplaces which can burn your dog or pet.

February is “Responsible Pet Owner’s Month” – Are YOU a responsible Pet Owner?

February is Responsible Pet Owner’s Month

Here are a few basic tips that define a responsible pet owner.  It goes without saying that being responsible means providing love, food, warmth, water and proper medical treatment when necessary.

  • Get your pet “fixed”. Have your female pets spayed and your male pets neutered. Not only will you be helping control the world’s animal population, but you will ensure a better quality of life for your little family members. Plus, by fixing your pets, you are inadvertently ensuring that more homeless animals will not be euthanized.
  • Attend obedience classes with your pet. At the very least, make sure all your pets are trained and well-behaved. This includes cats, and even smaller animal companions like gerbils and rabbits. If they have behavior problems, do what you can to figure out the problem and fix it. A happy, well-behaved pet makes for a happy family–and happy neighbors.
  • Keep your pets vaccinated. After the initial veterinary visits, you should take each animal to the vet annually for wellness exams and for their yearly vaccinations. This is especially important if your pet is able to venture outdoors and socialize with other animals.
  • Groom your pets on a regular basis. Try to brush them frequently. Some animal breeds don’t shed often, but it can be very beneficial to brush daily to bond with your pets. Brush their teeth, clip their nails, and trim their hair if they need it. A carefully groomed pet reflects a responsible pet owner.  Check for fleas often. Visit our dog grooming supply section for hundreds of great products.
  • Clean up after your pet. If you live in an apartment or somewhere with a shared yard, clean up after your dog eliminates. Pictured to the right is a popular Pooper Scooper that will make the job easier. Animal feces can carry harmful diseases and parasites that can make children very sick if they come into contact with it.

Winter Safety Tips for Pets from GregRobert Pet Supplies

Winter is arriving slowly across the United States – but nonetheless it’s time to start thinking about how to keep your pet safe during the cold months.

  1. Don’t leave your dog or pet outside for long periods of time when it is very cold. There are a few heated pet beds that are made specifically for outdoor dog houses or patios. Consider one of these.
  2. Keep your dog or pet warm, dry, and away from drafts. Dog sweaters are not just for style and may be just the right thing for your pet.
  3. Be extra careful when your dog or pet is near frozen water.   A dog can slip under the ice just like a human.
  4. Groom your dog or pet regularly to keep him/her properly insulated.
  5. Feed your dog extra calories if he is a working dog or a young, growing dog.
  6. Towel dry a wet pet or blow-dry a wet dog or pet before letting him/her go outside.
  7. Don’t leave your dog or pet alone in a vehicle.
  8. Antifreeze is poisonous to dogs or pets although they like the smell.
  9. Chocolate and alcohol (abundant during winter holidays) should be kept away from pets.
  10. Rock salt to melt ice may irritate dog or pets footpads. Either a pair of dog boots or Pet-safe salt should be used.
  11. Provide plenty of fresh water for your dog or pet.  An outdoor automatic waterer is convenient.
  12. Be careful of fireplaces which can burn your dog or pet.

Remember that most pets like cats and dogs and bunnies are warm-blooded mammals.  A good rule of thumb is “If you wouldn’t want to be out there for that long, your pet probably shouldn’t be”.
